29 March 2011

Today is Tuesday, so it’s a writing day.  There will be a sub with you.  My expectations are that you work productively on one of three things:

  1. Writing/revising
  2. Reading Part II of Fahrenheit 451
  3. Quizlet 1-104

  1. To go along with our discussion about ignorance as bliss today; on page 96 Montag ask Mrs. Phelps how her children are, and she responds with anger. “You know I haven’t any! No one in his right mind, the good lord knows, would have children!” I thought that this was ignorant because she doensn’t know what it’s like to have children, and how enjoyable it could be. She just assumes that nobody should have children because she and most of the society thinks it’s too much work, and an annoyance.

Also, I can’t remember if anyone mention the quote on page 51, when Montag talks with Millie about burning the woman. Millie responds to Montag’s emotions by saying “She’s nothing to me; she shouldn’t have had books. It was her responsibility, she should have thought of that. I hate her.” I thought that this was ignorance as bliss because she is talking so rudely about a woman that she has never met. Plus, she shows no emotion towards the fact that this woman was just killed in a fire, she just responds by saying that it was the woman’s fault and that she hates. her.
