21 Aug 2013

Today we did the usual introductory work–going over the English 10H Syllabus, passing out a silent reading calendar (1st Trimester) and bathroom passes, etc.

Then we read a short poem entitled “About School.” We talked about how it raises an important tension: there are moments in all of our lives when we must choose between being true to ourselves and our voices and being “successful.” And that’s ESPECIALLY true in school.

For tonight, I’m asking you to read through the school packets I gave you–there are four short readings in there:

  • Calvin and Hobbes cartoon
  • Growth vs. Fixed Mindset charts
  • “The Praise Paradox” article
  • Erica Goldson’s 2010 Commencement address (you can WATCH or LISTEN to it below if you prefer).

As you read, I want you to think about how these things impact your role and choices in school. Tomorrow, we’ll talk about what you’ve read and deconstruct school a little bit together.
