10H – 25-26 Sept 2014 – Foster

I’m extending the deadline on Task 1 by two days, as I have fallen one day behind 2x. That gives you until Wednesday October 8th.

I’ve passed out Parent Letter and a Permission Slip for LOOKING FOR ALASKA. No matter which option you choose, please return this slip to me no later than MONDAY, 9/29.

Today, we’ll have silent reading as usual and then I’m going to book talk two great books: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart and Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld.

Then we’ll split into two groups (boys and girls) to tackle the chapters from Foster. When we come back together, each group will “report” their findings and I’ll add any miscellany that’s useful.

My hunch is we won’t even get to weather today…but regardless, for tonight, I’d like you to write the journal entry I didn’t ask you to write last night, namely: Apply these three chapters to the MOVIE you saw and talk about what sense Foster would make of the film in light of season, politics, weather.

Friday, We’ll do our usual vocabulary routine, tackle the weather chapter and then –FINALLY– get to talk about what you found in the film as a whole group.

  1. I was in class for about the last 10 minutes, but regardless didn’t contribute to discussion. I think that Foster would most prominently notice the lack of weather on the ranch. The way the ranch was physically depicted throughout the movie was barren and desert like, which is a physical representation of the ranch’s predatory nature (every man for himself). There never seemed to be extreme weather, but instead a dullness to the surroundings. This imagery in the movie emphasized the individual nature of the ranch.

  2. So yesterday in class we discussed the of mice and men movie and what we noticed about it. Some ideas brought up in the class were the scenes with water like in the very beginning when Lennie is drinking from the stream and in the end where George and Lennie walk into that same stream before George kills Lennie. We discussed that these were baptism scenes and a lot or most scenes with water are baptism scenes which is like “cleansing” of the soul. We also took noticed about how whenever Curley’s wife was speaking to Lennie she kept him in the shadows (darkness) foreshadowing his death. I made connects with foster and the movie by thinking that it was good political writing, but I think with every piece of literature or film there’s bound to be some of the bad political writing. However we don’t see much of that in OMM. So political writing tells what is going on around the setting, in this case we have a Great Depression and that’s why everyone wants to be their own employers so they could never be fired (George, Lennie, and Candy getting tier own ranch). Also in OMM the film demonstrates good politics by keeping it hidden. The film/book is basically tearing apart this idea of “The American Dream” but it of course isn’t bluntly saying it, it’s shown in the way of the death of Lennie (who can symbolism the American dream in this case) and when George shoots him, he not only kills his best friend but also his dream.

  3. I didn’t contribute and class and wanted to put something out there. One thing that was different from what was depicted in the book was when George was traveling in the train at the beginning and end of the movie. While in the train at the start of the movie, George was surrounded by darkness with sudden glimpses of light shining through the slits of the wood to illuminate his face. The lighting combined with the blank expression on his face shows how melancholy or dull the situation is going to be during the course of the movie. Towards the end of the movie, again we see George on the train. This time, we have experienced the events that he has, or at least seen them, and we can understand the reason for the depressing mood inside the train. (George shooting Lennie, Lennie ruining the dream to live on a house with rabbits, etc…). I think that this is the director’s way of foreshadowing, and concluding the movie with a scene that reveals to us the mood that is always present somewhere in the movie.
