10H – 29-31 October 2014 – Discussion today and Pictures from yesterday

Today I’ll spend the majority of the day with the LFA group, and we’ll wrap up talking about the first part of Looking for Alaska.

Tomorrow is a reading day.

FRIDAY, I’ll spend the majority of the day with the FLB group, and we’ll talk through the chapter title work and then focus on mapping the hero’s journey onto Frankie’s experience. The LFA students will work on small groups doing that same hero’s journey experience.

Also, as promised for LFA folks, here are the pics from yesterday.

Communion Scenes in LFA
“Communion” Scenes in LFA – in which we realize the unhealthy “communions” lead to surface intimacy, but the “real communions” lead to true intimacy

“Baptism” Scenes in Looking for Alaska: in which we realize that the progressive baptisms foreshadow the AFTER section of the novel.

In which Mrs. B. wonders — for the first time — if the baptism scenes in Looking for Alaska create a sort of chiastic structure for the novel and we are all quite interested and excited by the possibility.

  1. When we were discussing the Colonel and Alaska’s relationships with their mothers and what drives them, I noticed Pudge’s situation. His mother threw him a going away party before he left for boarding school, hoping a bunch of people would show up. Instead, they had an awkward little communion. Then at Thanksgiving, his call to his mom showed that she really didn’t know him as well (insisting on his love of cranberry sauce) and he would rather stay at school.
