In first hour, we had some major debate about the role of the mentor. Matthew D proposed that there are really two journeys–one is the coming of age search for the Great Perhaps. The other is the coming of age search for friends and social acceptance. Hyde is the mentor for the first (though he only metaphorically dies). Alaska is the mentor for the later (though she is only metaphorically older than Pudge. Essentially, we decided the story within a story is like math: you have do do what’s IN the parentheses before you do what’s outside it (see drawing –>).
Scholars, I continue to be SO IMPRESSED with the quality of your thinking and work, especially with Alaska. You have proved Mr. John Green right–the world is foolish to condescend to teenagers. You are some of the brightest, most insightful human beings alive and I’m lucky to know you.
