  1. On the subject of the American Dream being a theme in the novel, I found a passage in chapter four that basically outlines what we had established in the group discussion today as being Steinbeck’s view on it. We established that Steinbeck views the American Dream as being only a fantasy that is unachievable and unrealistic. In Chapter 4, Crooks describes Lenny’s dream of one day having a farm as unachievable and unrealistic. In his own words: “Ever’body wants a little piece of lan’. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and gets no land. It’s just in their head.” We also established in the group discussion today that Lenny’s farm is a metaphor for the American Dream, so in a way this is Steinbeck’s way of directly voicing his own opinion about the Dream, through the character of Crooks.
