Today I’ll introduce Task 5, an explication. If you’ve been in ICCSD your whole life, then this is the first time in your academic career you’ve done an explication. I know that can feel intimidating. Luckily, there are lots of tools in your Poems Book to help you.
Today I’ll walk you through some of those materials, including:
- What an explication IS
- How to write a thesis statement for an explication
- What elements go in your proposal for your explication
- A sample explication, which we’ll read together paragraph-by-paragraph, talking about what makes it work and why it’s successful.
- Then you’ll have some time to get started.
A caveat on the poems you can choose–I’d recommend AGAINST “Rink Keeper’s Sestina.” It’s a fun poem to study in class, but writing an explication about it is a bit tricky.
