4/12 – Thinking about Midsummer

Today we’re going to talk about Midsummer.

  • The role of doubles/foils
  • Shakespeare’s view of romantic love
  • The humor techniques used in the play-within-a-play
  • Shakespeare’s use of motifs

On that last one, I’m going to give you a motif chart and set you the task of tracking 2 motifs through the play for when you arrive tomorrow. Then I’m going to ask you to write a lab book entry discussing what that motif is doing in the play. Why is it there? What does it accomplish? What message does it send?
